Trainees / New Pilots

Welcome to a wonderful, rich new hobby. There are so many different aspects of this hobby that you can take the rest of your life to explore them all. There is new technology emerging in aircraft (park flyers, helicopters), radios (spread spectrum)  and power plants  (electric) that are drastically changing the face of the hobby. It is easy to get lost in the number of options available to you.

There is no way to present a list of all the options available to you here on this web page.  I'd suggest that you do some reading to get the lay of the land (my favorite starting place are the rcuniverse forums (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/).  There are forums for all aspects of the hobby.  The beginners forum has discussions about many of the same issues that you are dealing with.

Once you have some idea of the options available, come to one of our club meetings and talk to an experienced flyer or one of our trainers.  They can give some recommendations of do's and don'ts.

We now have a club trainer available for instruction - An LT-40 with an OS 46 FX.  Nice slow trainer.

Some of our recommendations:

  • Start with a basic trainer setup.  Don't expect to learn on a warbird.
  • If possible, get an R/C flight simulator and practice on the computer at home.  This can reduce the amount of training time at the field from weeks and months down to days.
  • When you are ready to fly, work with a trainer. He can help make sure that your plane is setup properly and provide a buddy box training setup until you gain experience.
